FTC Robotics (Grades 6-8)

There will be a parent meeting on Tuesday, October 8th starting at 5:00 PM in DMS room A105.

Robotics students in grades 6-8 will learn to think like engineers. Teams design, build, and code robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. 16981 Gear Ratios will compete in the Vermillion League in 4 separate competitions.

Green Team
Green Team is focused around learning about ways we can make positive impacts on our environment as a whole, as well as make a positive environmental impact in our school. In past years, we have implemented changes in our lunch room, classrooms, and whole building.
We have a lot of fun stuff going on! We meet every other Wednesday from 3:15 - 4:15pm in room A139. No participation fee.

Jazz Band
Jazz Band (Grade 7-8)
Jazz Band is open to all 7th and 8th grade DMS band students. Rehearsals will be held twice a week on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 7:20 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. starting early November through mid-April. Fee is $75.
There is no audition required to participate. Jazz Band performs music from a variety of genres and styles including rock, funk, swing, Latin and blues. Jazz band will perform at several concerts during the school year as well as the possibility of a trip to a jazz festival. Students must be registered online in order to participate in Jazz Band.

Knowledge Bowl (Grades 6-8)
Team competition covering many subjects. Five member teams are made up of individuals with strengths covering as many areas as possible. The Knowledge Bowl season runs Oct. - Dec. Fee is $75.

Speech
Speech (Grades 7 - 12)
Speech Kickoff Meeting:
Calling all 7th-12th grade students interested in the Cardinal Speech program! We will be holding our kickoff meeting at 6:00pm on Tuesday, December 3 at Alexandria Area High School in room B235 (Dvergsten's room). This meeting is for returning members, new members, and potential members who are interested in learning more about the program. Students and parents/guardians are encouraged to attend.
Students in grades 7-12 are eligible to join speech; no prior experience necessary!
Speech is open to students in grades 7-12. Fee is $100.
Practices are held at Alexandria Area High School on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:30-5:00pm. In a typical week, students are asked to attend either the Monday or the Wednesday practice as well as the Friday practice. Season runs Dec - April.
Speech meets are held mostly on Saturdays, and the schedule is posted on our Speech Schoology page after the first official week of practice.
Students who are new to speech will be guided through category and piece selection by coach(es) and captains, so never fear trying something new!

Stormy Strings
Grades 6-8 Stormy Strings
Season runs Nov - May. Fee is $75.
The first Stormy Strings rehearsal of the 2024-2025 season will be held this coming Monday, October 7th at 7:20am.
Stormy Strings meets every Monday and Thursday from 7:20-8:00am.
Our first concert takes place November 21st, 7:00pm in the DMS Gym.
This activity is open to students of all grade levels who play an orchestra instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass) by audition.
In this activity, students will rehearse and perform string orchestra music in a small group setting. The group will perform in several concerts throughout the school year, both at Discovery and in the community, and may occasionally combine with the AAHS Rainbow Strings.
